Literary Criticisms are essays and articles written by professional book and literary critics. They will write about a variety of topics relating to authors, their work, and the possible issues that affected them and caused them to write in the first place.

Mr. Thomas is asking you to look at your novel from historical, cultural, biographical, gender, religious, social, psychological, and formalist perspectives. This means that the criticism you find should help to explain each of these ways of looking at the novel and interpreting the text. For example, looking at a book from a historical perspective means that you would try to find historical events that may have influenced the text; a book written in the 1960's may have perspectives or ideas that are in line with those of the Civil Rights Movement.

IN THE LIBRARY

We have a number of books that contain literary criticism for both Catch-22 and Invisible Man on hold for this project. Talk to us at the circulation desk and we'll be able to help!

We also have access to a number of ebooks and databases that are dedicated to just this kind of research. Here are the main areas where you should begin your search:

ABC-CLIO eBooks: http://ebooks.abc-clio.com/main.aspx

If you search for either Catch-22 or Invisible Man, you should be able to find a number of useful sources. Be sure to put your author's name or title of the book in quotation marks so that the database searches for the whole phrase. Also, be careful with "Invisible Man" because there is another non-related novel called "The Invisible Man" written by a different author.

Gale Virtual Reference Library: http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/nysl_se_wvhs (Click on Gale Virtual Reference Library once you are on the Gale page)

This is a collection of eBooks that cover a wide range of topics. To get to the Gale Virtual Reference Library specifically, click on the link off of Destiny and then scroll down to the database. This works similarly to the previous database.

RCLS Public Library Databases: http://www.rcls.org/maggen.htm

The databases you want to use are in the "Literature Resources" section. Twayne's Authors and Literature Resource Center are particularly useful.
