Investigate the Indian point reactor outside of West Point, NY. In your analysis, provide the following MINIMUM info: a. Location of the power plant b. Date it was first built and put online c. Description of the nuclear fission process that creates the energy and also, how this energy is eventually converted into electricity d. Current issues and/or problems related to the plant in terms of radiation leakage, waste disposal, and/or other safety concerns. 2. Breeder Reactors-What is a breeder reactor, how is it different from a light water reactor (i.e., a normal nuclear reactor), what is the fuel used, and what are the major advantages/disadvantages of breeder reactors over light water reactors? 3. History of nuclear power in the United States-How long has nuclear power been in use in this country, how was it first developed and/or discovered, where was the first plant built, how many reactors are currently in operation today, where are they located, and finally. 4. Nuclear power in the world-Provide an overall analysis of nuclear power usage worldwide including: a. Countries with the highest nuclear power usage and those with the lowest b. History and devpt of nuclear power globally (where it started first, who started it, etc.) c. It will be expected that you would also include a chart and/or graph illustrating nuclear power usage among countries d. Countries that are currently in the process of building nuclear power plants and those that seem to be decreasing their usage of nuclear power 5. Nuclear Bombs-What is a nuclear bomb made out of, how does it work, history behind its devpt, when have they been used historically, etc. 6. A worldwide view of nations with a nuclear arsenal-Investigate which nations have nuclear bomb technology, how long they have had it, what is their estimated arsenal, and what treaties are in place to control such arsenals and/or use of nuclear weapons. 7. Chenrobyl-Why is this considered the worst nuclear disaster in history? What happened, where did it happen, how and why did it happen, and what is the current state of affairs in the area surrounding Chernobyl? 8. 3 Mile Island-The US worst nuclear disaster! Same description as Chernobyl in terms of whats required. 9. Nuclear waste and radioactivity-What is to be done with all the spent fuel from nuclear power during the fission process? What is radiation, how is it measured, and why is it a cause for concern? What are some of the current plans for waste disposal being considered by the US government ? What are some of the issues surrounding said plans? 10. Terrorism and nuclear power-Ever since 9/11, it has been feared that terrorists could attack a nuclear power facility. What are some of the specific fears associated with a terrorist attack, how might it be accomplished, and what are the major implications of such an attack if it does occur? 11. Aircraft Carriers are powered by nuclear energy. Why and how is this positive or negative. Do other countries have nuclear powered aircraft carriers? 12. US has nuclear powered submarines—what and how is this positive or negative. Do other countries have nuclear powered subs? 13.
