Topics:

I.Trout History/Trout Conservation
1. Trout fishing in the catskills-Think about famous flyfisherman from the Catskills and their biographies here and how and what they contributed to flyfishing! also, dates and times!
2. Trout fishing in Warwick-The history of trout fishing in Warwick; what streams are trout found in Warwick and how has it changed throughout history, famous flyfisherman from Warwick (if applicable) and/or flies, etc.
3. The history of flyfishing in America-How is trout fishing different from region to region and why? Is there a different experience for fisherman west of the Rockies vs East for example? What are the differences and why? Also, give us a timeline of narratives you’ve researched related to trout fishing in these different regions, what was said , etc.
4. Trout Conservation history in New York-When and how did trout start to become protected and conserved by the state of NY? Why? What has been done and what currently is being done to protect and conserve trout? What state organizations and/or private groups are involved in these efforts and what are their objectives?
5. Famous Conservationists in America-What is a conservationist and what are they concerned with? Select a famous conservationist and tell us about him or her and what they did to protect wildlife resources. Note: it doesn’t have to be trout here! Can be anything related to conservation, just tell us what was done, why, and what was being protected/conserved!
6. Famous Women Flyfishers in America-Select 1 famous female flyfisherwoman and tell us about her: what did she contribute to flyfishing, her biography, etc.

II.Trout Ecology/Environmental Impacts on Trout
7. A trout’s ecological niche: what is a niche, how is it unique for trout (may have to do just 1 species here), and what are the major components of the trout niche? Also, how does the niche vary between 2 of the most common species, brookies and browns?
8. The effects of acid rain on brook trout populations in the Adirondack mountains. Give us a timeline of events: cause of the acid rain, where it comes from, major pollutants involved, etc. Also, how and why it has affected brook trout populations over the years and what is currently being done to alleviate this effect. Has it been successful? Why or why not?
9. The introduction of brown trout to America-What is the history behind brown trout’s intro to America? When? Where did they come from? Are there different strains of browns and if so, what are they? Has this introductory effort been successful? Why or why not? How has it impacted native trout populations and why?
10. Trout as Keystone species in ecosystems-What is a keystone species and why may trout be comsidered one? What is the basic ecosystem in which trout may be found in terms of food needed, habitat and structure and predator/prey intereactions and relationships?

III.Trout Biology/Evolution
11. The evolution of trout and char-What are the common ancestors shared between these 2 groups? What are some of the major species within each group and what are their major distinguishing characteristics within each group? What are the common distribution ranges of each group?
12. Trout recipes-Why do trout taste so good? What is the physiological/biological reason or reasons that can explain why trout are so palatable to humans whereas other species of freshwater fish such as large and smallmouth bass are considered not nearly as tasty?! What are some of the most common ways to cook or prepare trout? Has the way trout has been eaten changed over the years and if so, how?

IV.Trout and the Economy
13. Flyshops-What is the history of the fly-shopping America? Where was the 1st flyshop ever? Is there a difference in flyshop density or distribution depending on geographic location in the US? Why or why not? How lucrative is this industry considered to be? Can you provide us with numbers in terms of wealth created in local economies where such shops are located?
14. Fly tackle industry-What are the basic components or if you will "tackle" necessary to flyfish for trout? Identify these, their history of use and design and major manufacturers, both past and present. What are the biggest companies today and what do they make? How lucrative is their industry (i.e., are they making a lot of $$!!)
15. Flyfishing guides-What is a flyfishing guide and what do they do? Are there different types of guides and their area of specialization and if so, how and in what ways are they different? What makes a good and/or bad fishing guide? Who are some of the most famous fishing guides in trout flyfishing lore?
16. Trout hatcheries in America-Their history in the US. How long have they been around? Where was the first hatchery located? Was it publicly funded or private? Are there public and private hatcheries that exist today? Who runs them, where do they get their funding and where are they? (focus on NY primarily here!). Typically, what type of trout are raised , and what are the major components and/or design of a trout hatchery?
