History of Trout Stocking in the Catskills Research Questions
Conservation/Wildlife Mgmt
Mr. BIZ
.How did rainbow trout end up in the Delaware river? In what year were they first stocked in that river, by who, and how many (estimate is fine) were stocked? Also, why were they placed there?
.How did rainbow trout first end up in the Esopus Creek? (Same additional issues to address as #1)
.When was the first stocking of trout done in the catskills? Who did the stocking, how many trout were stocked, what species and what river/rivers were stocked?
.When were brown trout first introduced to the catskill rivers? What river/rivers were stocked, by who, and how many (estimate).
.How long has the DEC been in existence? What does the DEC stand for, what is its basic mission?
.Does the DEC ever stock trout streams with brook trout? If so, which ones, and how many are usually stocked?
.What are some of the disadvantages of stocking with brook trout in NY state waters when the brookie is the native trout as opposed to rainbows or browns?
.When analyzing current stocking and wild population data estimates, which catskill river/stream has the highest population of brook trout? Rainbow trout? Brown trout?
.The Mongaup river in Sullivan county, NY used to be referred to as one of the “Big 5” in terms of quality trout streams in the catskills. What were the other rivers also included in the “Big Five”?
.Why is the Mongaup no longer considered a quality trout stream? What happened to it?
.Identify at least one major river/stream in the catskills that originally was NOT a trout stream (i.e., contained very few if any trout) but now is regarded as such and also, one that used to be and is now not regarded as such.
.Identify three major lakes or ponds in the catskills that are historically known for their abundant trout. By this, I am referring to its reputation a long time ago, not today!
.From #12, describe the location of each pond/lake and briefly, what was said about them.
.What is the current status of the trout hatchery located along the Neversink river, in the neversink gorge? Is it operational?
.Identify all of the DEC operated trout hatcheries currently in operation in the Catskills.
